so first let me start by saying what I lack in colorful description on this informative blog I will make up in colorful words, in the literal sense.
Monday Nov 3rd: Raya started off our presentations for the period speaking wonderfully to a less than half full room. as Mr. Masson and the Juniors on down enjoyed her intepretation of the Rebel the Seniors strolled on in returning from Senior Class photo's (thank you yearbook) interrupting her midway through. She picked up gracefully where she left off and showed us a clip from Braveheart exhibiting William Wallace's archetype. The Rebel has been around for centuries and existed in the Greek Mythological characters Prometheus and Hydranes as well as in William Wallace of modern film. Next Zach and Alexis presented a well designed powerpoint on the Femme Fatale archetype. Each presented clearly and enthuastically and together seemingly aced the project until it was time to show the movie clips. Due to our schools aggravating block on everything useful they could not access their clips thus sat down project unfinished and grade on the line. The powerpoints creative (and animated!) aesthetics and both presenters thorough description of Delilah and the Sirens and Poisen Ivy and Catherine Tramel will undoubtedly earn them a good grade anyway.
Tuesday Nov 4th (election day!): With a brief ramble from Mr. Masson reminding us to vote despite all of us underage, unbeknownst to him we started the presentations off with Liam. Liam's archetype of choice was the Anti-Hero. A rather new archetype. Since this archetype hasnt existed for as long as others the mythological examples overlapped some other archetypes. Liam chose Oedipus, a rather sadistic character who kills his father and sleeps with his mother. He also chose Jacob, who wrestled an angel and is now father of Israel. His example from modern film was Jeff 'Dude' Lebowski from The Great Lebowski. His presentation ended rather quickly but was informative and entertaining with a clip from The Great Lebowski. Next up was Dean with a much longer but equally entertaining presentation. I was intrigued from the start when the opening slide was titled "Not-So-Monstrous-Monsters" an archetype he chose on his own. The psychology Dean explained was extremely riveting, and kind of ironic. He explained that this archetype is actually more human in some ways than humans are but yet still remain the outer appearance of a monster. His mythological examples were Kappa's from Japan and Chiron's from Greece. Dean's example from modern film was Frankenstein from Van Helsing. After 2 clips from the movie Dean sat down with; by the sound of the applause; an A. (and p.s. Dean, you seem to take criticism well, but the conversation you heard in the hallway was actually of a complimentary nature, not critical)
Wednesday Nov 5th: well first off, I stand corrected. Apparently Mr. Massons ramble yesterday was not in fact a ramble at all, but a brief sharing of feeling about how each and every one of us will witness history, with either a woman v.p. or black/muslim prez. By the way for anyone who is deaf and blind, Obama will take the presidential office and as of now President Bush takes on the title Lame Duck until Obama's inauguration in January. Moving on to the reason im experimenting with colors and fonts instead of studying for college midterms; todays presentations. First up was Patrick with the Flawed Hero archetype. His mythological archetypes were Cuchulainn from Irish derivation and Zeus from Greek derivation. Cuchulainn was a hero because he won many battles and wars, but his major flaw was that on the battle field he distinguished not between friend or foe, and killed all in his vicinity. Zeus had many flaws as well, such as sex addiction, incestuous tendencies and a hunger for power at all costs, including murder. Patricks example from modern film was Max Fisher from Rushmore. the clip shown was an interesting montage but at its end no one was able to connect it to the Archetype at hand, but upon explanation it was quite possibly one of the best presented. Patricks psych evaluation of human nature and the Flawed Hero explained that we often do heroic things, however big or small that make us stand out, but in the end we still arent perfect. Ben was next up on the roster and presented another (planned or coincedence?) Hero archetype. the Tragic Hero. We see Oedipus again today, but this time in much further (more interesting) detail. apparently after finding out he killed his father and his wife and childrens mother is really his mother he gouges his eyes out. Remember Alexis and Zack's Delilah and Samson? well today Samson is back. and he too gouges his eyes out after being tricked by Delilah. Ben also chose David Drayton from The Mist as his example from modern film and showed the class the ending scene of the movie. personally i have not seen this movie (not a surprise to anyone who knows me) and was utterly flabbergasted at this movie. With two voices whispering in my ear telling me the premise of the story I watched wide-eyed, mouth agape. Ben, if you by chance happen to read this, awesome job. Best movie clip so far. So with that I end this day of Deja Vu with recurring archetypes, mythological examples and self-inflicted torture.
Thursday Nov 6th: Hope kicked off todays presentations with a wonderful interpretation of the Mystic. Her mythological characters were quite interesting. Of high recognition, was Merlin the one who's responsible for todays sword in the stone story. Her example from modern film was Yoda; making this his second appearance in our Archetype projects. Hope showed us a clip from the star wars movie. Her presentation was brief but informative, and exquistely presented. Next up was Monasia and Jamean with The Outcasts. The mythological archetypes of their choosing was Adam and Eve. Jamean presented Quasimodo as her modern film example and showed a clip of the disney movie (much harsher than I remembered!) and Monasia presented a clip from Who's Eating Gilbert Grape. her example was sopposed to be gilbert's obese mother and retarted brother but she had some trouble finding the right clip. overall both performances today were very well executed.
Friday Nov 7th: Woot Woot! today is my last day of logging! not that this wasnt fun and all, but its time to pass the torch to Amber, who's lucky enough to be next weeks informant to anyone outside our class reading this. Today's presentations were catch-ups and make-ups and fix-ups. Zack and Alexis went first showing their long awaited film clips. a clip of Poisen Ivy from Batman and Robin expressed how a Femme Fatale does her best work. The duo's other clip was a trailer of Basic Instinct because they did not get the movie. Next was Jimmy, who was absent the day of his presentation. He worked with Matt on the Evil Incarnate. Jimmy showed his examples, of Thanatos from Greek mythology and Darth Vador from modern film. Thanatos, an interesting character tricked people into shackles, and killed them. He ended up being tricked himself thus unable to kill anyone else. Since the God of War was upset no one was dying in war he freed Thanatos. Jimmy's modern clip was from Star Wars.
and with that im out of here, only to be back eventually. a full year course with new loggers every week, it will be my turn soon enough =) as for now, i've got to finish my own mythology essay for my page.
